Mini Competition Winners
Mini Competition 1: In 1-2 sentences, tell us what languages you’d love to learn and why.
Brady B, Mead High School
“I’d love to learn Japanese because of its rich cultural context and because it would let me enjoy Japanese literature in its original language. I’m also interested in learning Arabic, as it would open doors to understanding the different cultures and regions, from North Africa to the Middle East.”
Mini Competition 2: Send us a photo/image of a place you’d want to travel to where you can apply the language you’re learning.
Mickey B, Erie High School
“If I could travel anywhere, I would choose Panama due to the architecture and the Panama Canal. I think it would be extremely interesting to see how ships move different elevations within the canal itself. I have previously gone to Costa Rica and was able to use my limited knowledge in Spanish to communicate with locals. Due to me having more experience and knowledge in the Spanish language, I would love to try again at communicating with others entirely in Spanish.”
Mini Competition 3: Share a quote in a foreign language and briefly explain why it’s your favorite.
Kaius N, Erie High School
“My favorite quote comes from the book series, Ranger's Apprentice. The quote goes,
« Pensez à un résultat positif et vous y parviendrez. Laissez le doute pénétrer votre esprit et le doute deviendra autoréalisateur. » - Will Treaty, Ranger’s Apprentice : Siege of Macindaw (livre 6)
Translated it’s: “Think of a positive outcome, and you will achieve it. Allow doubt to enter your mind, and the doubt will become self-fulfilling.”-Will Treaty, Ranger’s Apprentice: Siege of Macidaw (book 6)
This quote is my favorite as it can be applied to so many things in life, as well as reminding me to think hopeful and not doubt. Which is very applicable to me as I play Le Violoncelle (The cello) and I imagine a great performance, and amazing sound. And I also don't let myself doubt my abilities and hours of practice.”
